Breeds of dogs: Slovensky Cuvac

Origin, classification and history

Origin: Slovak Republic.
F.C.I classification: Group 1 - shepherd dogs and cattle dogs (excluding Swiss cattle dogs).

The Slovensky Cuvac (Tchouvatch slovaque) evolved alongside the Slovak mountain dwellers, free peoples who were never touched by the vassalage of the Middle Ages. These dogs, together with mountain herds and Huzul horses, constitute the tradition of this region. This breed derives directly from the Arctic groups. Remnants of their ancestors were found in the freezing regions of Northern Europe at the edge of the glaciers.
